Inside the Data Center AI Boom: The Power Layer — Who Lights the Buildings and Who’s Hiring

Updated: 10 hours ago

Part 4/6 (Chips, Servers, Cooling, Power, Design, CoLo)

The parent piece — “The AI Gold Rush: Who’s Selling the Shovels” — flagged power as the binding constraint on the entire AI build-out. Capital is not the bottleneck. Chips are not the bottleneck. Transformers, gas turbines, switchgear, and interconnection queues are. Roughly 12 GW of U.S. data-center capacity is slated to come online in 2026, but only about a third is under active construction — not for lack of money or silicon, but because nobody can get the equipment fast enough. Half of planned 2026 U.S. data-center builds are expected to be delayed or cancelled.

Five sub-layers in this post: turbines + generation equipment, switchgear + UPS + power distribution, transformers, IPP / nuclear, and SMR / future-decade wildcards. Then careers at five companies hiring hardest right now.

1. Turbines & Backup Generation in Data Centers

GE Vernova is the single largest single beneficiary of the AI build-out in any layer of this series, full stop. Q1 2026 Electrification orders alone hit $2.4 billion in data-center equipment — more than all of the prior year combined. Total company orders were $18.3 billion (+71%), backlog rose to ~$163 billion, and the gas-turbine reservation backlog stretched to 100 GW (targeting 110 GW by year-end). Siemens Energy is effectively sold out into the early 2030s, with Bloomberg flagging hundreds of billions in planned gas-plant projects at risk of delay because no manufacturer can deliver. On the backup-generator side, Caterpillar grew power-gen retail sales 44% YoY, and Cummins raised its full-year revenue forecast from 8% to 11% on data-center demand.

2. Switchgear, UPS, Power Distribution for Data Centers

Between the substation and the server is a wall of equipment most readers couldn’t identify in a lineup — automatic transfer switches, medium-voltage switchgear, UPS units, busbars, PDUs. Vertiv is the largest single AI infrastructure play in the layer: Q1 2026 revenue $2.65 billion (+30% YoY), full-year guide $13.5–14 billion, backlog over $15 billion. Eaton and Schneider Electric round out the trio that controls most of the U.S. data-center power-equipment market. The U.S. UPS market alone is sized at $8.76 billion in 2025, growing to $12.47 billion by 2030. ABB and Siemens (separate from Siemens Energy) cover the higher-voltage switchgear that routes power through the facility.

3. Transformers — The Hidden Bottleneck

Pre-2020, lead times for high-power transformers ran 24–30 months. Today they run three to five years in some cases, against AI project schedules promised on 12–18 months. The math does not work — which is why roughly half of planned U.S. 2026 data-center capacity is at risk of delay or cancellation, and only ~12 GW will come online with one-third actively under construction. Chinese manufacturers control roughly 60% of global transformer production capacity; U.S. exports of transformers from China hit a record in 2025, up ~36% YoY by value. Hitachi Energy, Siemens Energy, ABB, and GE Vernova are the four big Western names — each is sold out for years.

4. Independent Power Producers + Nuclear

If gas turbines are the equipment, IPPs are the operating companies that own and run them — and they have become some of the most consequential AI infrastructure deals signed this decade. Constellation Energy closed its $16.4 billion acquisition of Calpine in January 2026 (~$26.6 billion EV), creating the largest U.S. electricity producer. Calpine separately agreed to supply 760 MW behind-the-meter to CyrusOne data centers in Texas. Microsoft signed with Constellation to restart Three Mile Island. Vistra signed ~2,600 MW of long-term nuclear PPAs with Meta across three PJM plants. Nuclear is the unambiguous winner of the AI build-out — not just SMRs in 2030, but reopened, relicensed, and upcycled large-light-water units in 2026.

5. SMR + Future-Decade Wildcards

Small Modular Reactors will not power 2026 AI data centers, but the deals signed in 2025–2026 will define who controls carbon-free baseload power well into the 2040s. Google’s Kairos Power PPA (Hermes 2 reactor at Oak Ridge — 50 MW initial, 500 MW by 2030) was the first commercial SMR offtake commitment. Oklo + Meta agreed to a 1.2 GW nuclear campus in Ohio with site work beginning 2026. TerraPower’s Natrium reactor pairs a 345 MW sodium-cooled core with molten-salt thermal storage that can surge to 500 MW — built for spiky AI loads. NuScale and X-Energy round out the field. Most of these companies are pre-revenue, all are hiring engineers.

Careers: Five Companies, Five Buckets, One Taxonomy

Same five buckets as posts #1–#2. The five companies below — GE Vernova, Vertiv, Eaton, Schneider Electric, and Constellation Energy — are the largest hirers across the power layer. Counts directional as of mid-June 2026.

GE Vernova — ~85,000 employees globally; 800+ engineering reqs in the U.S.

GE Vernova is hiring across gas-turbine engineering (Schenectady, NY; Greenville, SC), grid equipment (Stafford, CT; Roanoke, VA), and project execution worldwide. The single largest hiring track is gas-turbine project engineering — the company has 100 GW of turbine reservations and not enough engineers to deliver them on schedule. Casting process engineers in Schenectady alone start in the $82K–$137K range.

Surprise: Schneider’s EcoStruxure DCIM team is now actively hiring software engineers — most candidates don’t think of Schneider as a software employer, which is exactly why those reqs sit open longer.

Constellation Energy — largest U.S. nuclear operator; 120+ nuclear engineering reqs

Constellation operates ~80 nuclear units across the U.S. and is the largest single employer of licensed reactor operators in the country. Post-Calpine, it also owns one of the largest gas-fleet portfolios. Nuclear hiring is concentrated in PA, IL, MD, NY, and TX; gas/IPP work spreads across CA, TX, and PJM states. Constellation runs paid 10-week summer internships and a multi-year operations training pipeline.

Surprise: the licensed-reactor-operator track at Constellation pays $39–$73/hour, doesn’t require a four-year degree, takes ~24 months of training, and is one of the most secure long-horizon careers in U.S. industrial work.

Where the Doors Are

For mechanical and electrical engineers, GE Vernova’s gas-turbine and grid backlog is the single largest hiring pull in the layer, with Schenectady, Greenville, and Stafford as the gravitational centers. For electrical-trade and HVAC career-changers, Vertiv and Eaton are both running field-service-technician programs that translate AAS-credentialed candidates into $40+/hour roles with strong overtime. For new finance/accounting grads, GE Vernova’s FMP and Eaton’s FMP are two of the best rotational programs in U.S. industry and recruit from non-elite schools. For sales engineers and solutions architects, Schneider Electric and Vertiv have the broadest data-center sales motions in the layer. For someone interested in nuclear, Constellation’s licensed-reactor-operator track is the most underrated long-horizon career in the country: no four-year degree required, $80K–$150K all-in, and the AI boom just made nuclear a multi-decade growth story for the first time since the 1970s.
